One year down, ??? to go.

Fri May 15, 2009, 9:18 PM
Well, the semester is over. No more Thursday night lab preparations, no more 7:45am math discussions. (I was more sane in my choices for next semester, thank goodness) No dining hall food for three months. (Yay!)

I must say that my feelings are mixed. I don't have to worry about grades, tests, etc... for three months, but on the other hand, I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with myself for these three months. A part of me is already missing the intellectual stimulation of school. I guess that is a good thing, if I left the semester feeling totally burned out, it would make returning in the fall something to dread, rather than look forward to.

I hope to get a job, though I'm not sure what my chances are, considering the economy.

I'll certainly be working on my art, look forward to some new stuff soonish.

Other summer things to do:
Improve my skills with Excel. I know the basics, but I know there is a whole lot more I can do with formulas and stuff.

Learn GUI programing in Java, I learned the basics at school, but I'd like to be able to make it all look nicer than just a console program.

Continue to study Japanese. I was hoping to take this as a class next year, but it's not going to happen, maybe the year after next. In the meantime, learning as much as I can on my own can't hurt.

That's all for now, I had hoped to catch up on my messages and deviations, but my internet access is limited, and will likely remain that way through the summer, so you won't be seeing much of me I fear.

Ben

GUI in Java? ugh... Not that I have something against AWT or Swing, it's just that Java isn't exactly made for GUI things... (spend about half this semester learning a few things to make GUI but it's really not that fulfilling...)

Just so that you know, I return watches, unless stated otherwise :)

What are you planning to go into? I can give you some ideas on critical skills needed (at least for east coast), I've been looking at high level careers there for awhile. :)

Career-wise you mean? Nuclear Engineering, with a focus in plasma research(meaning fusion research), my school has a very good program for that. :) (They have both a Fission reactor and a fusion reactor on campus. :D)

The problem is, C++ is still too advanced for me, and if I go with a .NET language I'll essentially be shackling myself to a Windows platform. (I'd really like to do game applets, actually)

Okie, here's a couple of skills that I've found to be highly desirable when going into a career in science.

1. Statistical programming is going to separate you from the rest of the crowd. Being able to create your own charts and such for your data is crucial. I recommend looking into R programming (can use C++ and FORTRAN code as well), PASW, or SQL. Microsoft office just doesn't cut it when your trying to map the equation of state of high energy plasmas. R is completely free btw.

2. If you're gonna be making your own patents (which I highly recommend), then you need to become familiar with the process. You can probably find a couple of books in the library on intellectual property rights. You'd be suprised what you can get a patent for, and my wife has had her ideas stolen. . . twice. Get on it, smart cookie! :>

Just a couple of suggestions from a humble scientist. :>
