In our chem lab tomorrow morning, we will be using a Plutonium/Beryllium mixture to irradiate some silver. Aside from the sheer awesomeness of doing experiments involving plutonium, I found out this week that the lead lined barrels, that hold the radioactive mixture, were donated to the Chem department as leftovers from The Manhattan Project! :giggle:

The thought that Richard Feynman might have once run experiments using those same barrels gives me happy shivers. :D

Yep, the real deal. Overall the experiment was rather anticlimactic. Considering it involved radiation, that was probably a good thing...

Are you in college yet? Radioactive material is very strongly regulated, making it expensive for high schools keep on hand. I doubt even we would be using it, if it were not used for higher level courses.

According to the book, the amount of radiation we were in contact over the course of the experiment was equivalent to 1/10 of a dental X-Ray.

The barrel looked suitably impressive though. It was painted a dark grungy green, was rusted, and had lots of bright yellow radiation stickers on it. :D

If you really like this kind of thing, try to find a good research college, especially one with a strong engineering, physics, or chemistry program. :D
