NOT a render!
Created in Paint.NET: [link]

Wish I made this one bigger, but it was initially only an experiment in technique. (I kinda grew from there...)

Probably 5 hours.

Looking for critique on ways to improve the lighting.

Big thanks to the People on the Paint.NET fan forums: [link] for helping me improve it from it's sorry state: [link]

(BTW, we are always looking for new members! :D)

really great work on this one Ben

I'm off now to look at your PDN gallery to see the comments and tips you received there. I really like the shadows of the windows and hopefully can figure out what you've done from the posts there.

I like it a lot, but one thing I would do to work on the light is to make it a bit whiter and maybe even a little blueish. Then after that, I would add some sort of lightly opaque line on the edges of the light to define its shape. Very nice job, how many layers did you make with this one?

Thank you very much for the comments and critique. :D

I was experimenting with color a lot with this one. I agree the yellow could be toned down a bit, though I don't think blue would be right, the shadows have a cool tint to them, so the light really needs to be a warm color to make the colors work realistically.

Between 35 and 40 layers, 50 if you count the hidden guide layers.

Thanks! Glad you like it! :D

The technique itself isn't all that complicated, loads of lines, gradients, blurs, and layers. I don't even think I used any plugins besides Curves+. :)

Heh, I know all about insane layers. It took 15 just for the sword of that painting I did. 73 total rofl.

Don't you love it when you get to that many layers, and get those crazy lost moments where your like "wtf, where is that one place?!"

Geometrically speaking, your lighting is very linear. You're treating the window as if light is coming inside it from a point source. The light on the outside should be coming from several different angles just from atmospheric dispersion alone, aside from any terrain features. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is to soften it up a little bit on the edges, and broaden the light out in order to get a more realistic effect. Any light coming in on the right side would just be from an random reflections, there should be no glow (unless there are two sources of light, I'm assuming no).

Hope that helps. :>
